ABOUT GUY…
How did you get started in bicycle racing?
I got into riding through my dad who was competing in triathlons at the time. I did a couple duathlons and triathlons but I didn’t enjoy the running or the swimming. When I was a lot younger my dad would take me out on rides early in the morning, before school sometimes. I remember constantly yelling at him to slow down because I couldn’t keep up, now he’s yelling at me.
What is your favorite memory or experience on the bike?
It’s hard to pick just one memory or experience that I’ve had. It’s obviously great to win, and the feeling that comes with it is great, but there are so many other things that make cycling enjoyable. It’s great to be a part of a winning team, seeing someone else on the team take the glory and knowing that you played a part in that. I try to enjoy every day on the bike as much as the next, taking it one day at time, trying taking it all in as much as I can and not taking anything for granted.
What makes you most excited about riding for the Trek-LIVESTRONG team?
Racing on the Trek-LIVESTRONG team means a lot to me, not only because of the incredible support staff and athletes on the team, but also because we are playing a part in raising money for the fight against cancer. My grandfather passed away this year from prostate cancer; that was the closest experience I’ve had with cancer, his passing touched me deeply. I’m so excited that I can play a small role to help combat this terrible disease. I really appreciate the efforts of Lance Armstrong, the LAF and other organizations that are committed to raising funds for such a charitable cause. Nowadays it seems like everyone is affected by cancer in some way or another, it’s great to see there are so many people out there that want to find a cure.
What is your favorite place to ride?
Home is always nice, but my favorite place for riding is Lucca, Italy. The area is so gorgeous, I can’t think of many places that are more beautiful. There are so many amazing climbs, the scenery is incredible and the food isn’t bad either.
What accomplishment or career achievement are you most proud of?
Honestly, I feel like my greatest accomplishment hasn’t been on a bike, but rather achieving my Eagle Scout. I’m more proud of that than any of my racing results. It was such a relief to attain that award, it required so much hard work and dedication, I learned a lot of things that helped me become a better person and bike rider. It really taught me to fight even when the times are tough and to finish what you’ve started. I feel like my greatest sporting accomplishment thus far has been the win in the Dortmund UIV six day this year with partner Austin Carroll, it was a great feeling and a huge blessing.
