ABOUT JULIAN…

How did you get started in bicycle racing?
When I was in high school, I wanted to do something competitive, but nothing the school offered appealed to me.  I’ve been Alpine skiing since I was 3, so that seemed to be the natural sport to pursue. I went on a mountain bike ride with my dad to discuss the idea, and he pretty much told me that he and my mom didn’t want to drive me up the mountain everyday for practice.  I was a little angry, and for the first time lit it up on a climb, and I even dropped my dad!  So he and my mom suggested I start racing, and I’ve been in love with the sport ever since.

Tell us about your first race.
My first race was a Cat 4 industrial park crit on a cold March morning.  I got crushed into the ground by a bunch of weekend warriors with hairy legs.  Actually, that sounds like most of my early races…

What is your favorite memory or experience on the bike?

It’s a little unfair to pull just one favorite memory out of the hat, so I’ll rattle off a couple snippets of ones I like: mountain biking with my dad, the first time I dropped down the banking of a velodrome, late night cross riding in the snow on campus, and every single time I crossed the finish line first.

What accomplishment or career achievement are you most proud of?
Winning the U23 Pursuit Championships was awesome in so many ways; I only went to track nationals to get experience, and I’d never ridden a 4k pursuit before.  To do as well as I did was a surprise, and that whole trip is a very fond memory.
